It’s Make{You}over time!
When Jen moved in her house she painted everything tan, had tan curtains and a rustic country style with tan, red and brown knick knacks. She is ready to transition her style to something more contemporary, but needs a little push to do it.
Jen knows she wants color. She took a leap a few months ago and painted her kitchen green so we know she has the guts to throw some color in a room. She recently replaced her curtains with a gorgeous teal toile pattern and purchased an adorable red cabinet. The lovely pink carpeting will be going soon and replaced with a shade of tan/brown.
Let’s see how we can give this room that something special Jen is looking for.
I don’t mind the tan walls. Around the corner from her living room is her green kitchen so tan walls are a great neutral. We can add color and texture with pillows, accessories, storage and wall art.
Jen already has a gorgeous color palette picked out. I love the bright reds and teals paired with the softer yellows and blueish grey.
I love the curtains Jen found at Pier 1. The teal toile pattern gives a great frame to the large living room window and helps to snazz up the tan walls. The little red cabinet is perfect, but needs to be shown off.
First thing is first, get rid of all the small shelving on the walls and sort through the knick knacks. Some of the red/teal ones can stay, but get rid of anything that screams country.
I would sand down and paint the coffee table white and add some more modern looking storage underneath. Nothing too baskety.
With kids and gadgets it is obvious that Jen needs a little bet better system for storage in her TV area.
Find a thrifted dresser to repurpose into an entertainment center like I did here. I would paint the dresser white to keep consistent with the coffee table and to not take away from the red cabinet. The dresser will provide way better storage than the existing entertainment center and will be a substantial piece to anchor that wall without having the TV be the center of attention when it comes to the decor. The top drawers of the dresser can be removed so game systems and the cable box will be easily accessible. The photos that are hanging on the wall can be moved to the top of the dresser to be showcased a little bit better.
For that wall behind the chair I would find two long chunky shelves to hang. Here you can showcase a few stacks of books, photos and accessories to give that pop of color and tie the room together. Some of the accessories Jen already had would work perfectly on these shelves.
While I don’t love how these are decorated, I like the style of these shelves. Deeper shelves are great because they are multipurpose for storage and decorating. I would keep the shelves white and have them almost the entire length of the wall, leaving about a foot or so on either side.
That comfy, oversized chair would be great for a chevron or graphic pattern throw {I have seen some adorable ones at Home Goods lately.} and keep the pillows simple with the two solid ones that are already on the couch.
For the sofa throw pillows I would stick with a graphic pattern since the curtains are toile. I like the combination of the yellow and teal with a few pillows in each fabric to compliment the curtains and accessories in the room.
If you wanted to go even further in the room you could update the darker tan of the chair and sofa and purchase lighter tan slipcovers. I have used Sure Fit slipcovers before and they are durable, washable and reasonably priced.
If it is an option to update the ceiling fan something a little more modern like this one from Lowe’s would look nice and update the space.
Move the red cabinet in place of the skinny table. The cabinet is too cute not to show off.
Make this a focal point for the room. Create a gallery wall like this one from Tatertots & Jello. Mix framed photos and fabric wrapped canvas and other similar art to bring all the colors of the room together. Photos can easily be changed out for an updated look anytime.
A round side table in the space between the chair and sofa would be a great spot for a lamp for an option of soft lighting in the room. You could even find a small dresser like my teal dresser. It would be a great spot for more storage and you could paint a pop of color for the room {Teal maybe?!}
So, what do you think? How would you update Jen’s living room?
